The Jacksonville Dragon Boat Club is offering two, one-week introduction to Dragon Boat Racing camps to Jacksonville’s youth.  Participants will be introduced to the exhilarating sport of dragon boat racing.  Instruction will include sport-related and age-appropriate Safety, Dragon Boat Paddling Technique, Video Review, Exercise Activities, and Racing Strategies.

The head coach is Marty Millard, a Retired U.S. Navy Commander, Head Coach of the Jacksonville Dragon Boat Club, Board Member of the Southeastern Region Dragon Boat Association (SRDBA) and Member of the 2015 & 2017 Team USA, Senior B (over 50), National Dragon Boat Crew that competed at the Nations World Dragon Boat Championships in China last in October, 2017.

Youth Paddlers are welcome to participate in one or both camps.  Each week-long camp can support up to 40 youth paddlers.  Should there be a need, additional weeks will be offered to ensure there are slots for everyone.  The second camp will include the same intro to Dragon Boat Racing as the first camp, while allowing paddlers that participated in the earlier camp to refine and improve their abilities with more advanced concepts and techniques.  Graduates of these camps will be invited to join the Jacksonville Dragon Boat Club’s Youth crew to continue developing their technique and fitness with goals of participating in local and state festivals, then ultimately trying out for Team USA National Youth Crews to compete at the Nations World Championships.

Each week will include daily on-water paddling sessions and shore-based instruction.  The week will wrap up with a Race Day where crews will race each other in a series of races and awards will be presented.
